Laser skin rejuvenation has recently undergone a quantum improvement by the addition of new technology. Fractional laser resurfacing was introduced 3 to 4 years ago by a company known as Fraxel. The Institute of Aesthetic Surgery was quick to realize the advantages of this significant improvement in laser skin rejuvenation. We have had Fraxel lasers for more than 3 years and presently have 3 of these lasers in our two offices.
Other laser companies have also recognized the importance of this development and have developed their own technologies, improving on the original Fraxel. While there is a strong indication for using the original Fraxel for some patients, other patients are better served by one of the newer technologies. We have recently acquired the MiXto fractional laser which is the latest laser to be introduced incorporating the fractional technology.
The MiXto fractional laser is a carbon dioxide laser, meaning that it is excellent in treating the surface of the skin for a variety of conditions. Specifically it will treat dyschromia, weathered skin also known as elastosis, aging including fine lines, and scars. While all of these conditions are still treatable by the traditional carbon dioxide laser, the MiXto laser has its distinct advantages over this laser which we have been using for approximately 15 years. Faster healing time is one of the major improvements as well as the need for less anesthesia. Typically these treatments only taken a few minutes and anesthesia may require only a numbing cream or oral analgesics. The healing time varies depending on the depth of the treatment and may be as little as one or two days with almost no down time from your job to as much as a week with 3 or 4 days of down time. As with other lasers there should be almost immediate improvement but the final results will not be seen for several months as your skin rebuilds itself from the scars and aging process. Severe cases may require more than one treatment.
We have two of these lasers, one at each of our offices at Celebration and Altamonte. You will need a consultation prior to the treatment in order to develop a treatment plan. In many instances we will prescribe medications prior to the treatment and can discuss the after treatment protocol.
